What is guy de lusignan?

Guy de Lusignan was a French knight and nobleman who briefly served as the King of Jerusalem. He was born in Poitou, France in 1150 and inherited the title of Count of Jaffa and Ascalon through his marriage to the sister of Baldwin IV, the reigning King of Jerusalem.

In 1186, Guy de Lusignan was appointed as regent of Jerusalem when Baldwin IV became gravely ill. Upon the death of Baldwin IV, his nephew, the young Baldwin V, was crowned King of Jerusalem but soon died, leaving Guy de Lusignan as the next in line for the throne.

Guy de Lusignan's reign as King of Jerusalem was marked by conflict and controversy, particularly over his decision to engage in battle against the Muslim forces of Saladin at the Battle of Hattin in 1187. This battle was a major defeat for the Christian forces and ultimately led to the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin.

Despite his lack of success as king, Guy de Lusignan remained an influential figure in the Crusades and went on to serve as the regent of Cyprus and the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. He died in 1194 and was buried in the Church of Saint Peter in Antioch (modern-day Turkey).
